Egypt: 29 held for spying for Turkey

Egypt’s prosecutor-general has remanded 29 Egyptians in custody pending an investigation into their alleged espionage in collaboration with Turkey and their membership in a terrorist organisation, according to an official statement issued by the prosecutor’s office.

Prosecutor-General Nabil Sadik added that the country’s High State Security Prosecutors continue to investigate what was reported by the general intelligence directorate, which includes agreeing with Turkish intelligence and security personnel as well as members of the International Muslim Brotherhood on seizing power in Egypt by disturbing state institutions with the aim of bringing them down.

According to the statement, the suspects monitored negative and positive situations inside Egypt and provided this information to Turkey with the help of Muslim Brotherhood members and other hired collaborators.

The second aspect of the plot was planned to be carried out by creating media outlets based outside Egypt and aimed at using the information acquired by espionage to disseminate rumours and false news to stir up controversy and disturb public opinion, the statement added.
