‘Tottenham’s Ben Davies?!’ – Jurgen Klopp laughs off transfer links to Preston defender as Reds close in on deal

Liverpool have entered talks over a £2million deal to sign Preston defender Ben Davies – although Jurgen Klopp seemed none the wiser after the 3-1 victory at West Ham on Sunday.

With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez out for the foreseeable future, further injuries to Fabinho and Joel Matip this week have forced Liverpool into the market.

Davies is highly-regarded in the Championshi

The Reds are searching for a solution to their center-back crisis with Monday’s deadline fast approaching – and talkSPORT understands they have found their man.

Despite links to Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi and West Ham’s Issa Diop, the Reds have dipped into the Championship for a solution in the form of Davies from Preston.

The 25-year-old, who has spent his entire football career at Preston, is thought to be available for £2m and the deal could see Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg sent the other way on loan.

When asked about the reports, Klopp laughed as he told Sky Sports: “Tottenham’s Ben Davies?!

“No nothing to say about it.

Preston are currently 11th in the Championship

“I say all the time that it makes sense, but by the way Nat Phillips played a decent game and Milly [James Milner] shouted at Hendo [Jordan Henderson] ‘you better be careful, if you play like this you’ll play there for the rest of his career’.

“Our eyes are always open and we’ll try to fix our situation, if we do it I don’t know. If not, then we’ll play like we did tonight. It’s not a problem…”

Davies had been expected to sign a pre-contract agreement with Celtic ahead of a summer move – but is set to snub the Hoops for Anfield.

Klopp distanced Liverpool from the Davies links

Liverpool are looking for an inexpensive, short-term solution and Davies fits the bill.

Speaking on Friday, Klopp said: “I am not sure there is an £80million centre-back available at the moment and a club thinks ‘We can get £80m for him so we will sell him’.

“I don’t think that’s the case. Actually, pretty much I know. This calibre of player the teams would not sell them now.

“We need to find the right player and one which suits our financial situation, that’s clear as well.”
