The Champions League Round of 16 draw was held this morning, and Tottenham Hotspur now know their next opponent. Spurs were drawn against Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in the competition, with the first match to take place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on February 19.
First, here’s the full draw.
- Dortmund vs. Paris St. Germain
- Real Madrid vs. Manchester City
- Atalanta vs. Valencia
- Atletico Madrid vs. Liverpool
- Chelsea vs. Bayern Munich
- Lyon vs. Juventus
- Tottenham vs. RB Leipzig
- Napoli vs. Barcelona
So there were a number of super scary potential matchups for Spurs, and they avoided almost all of them. Leipzig is a very good team — currently top of the Bundesliga ahead of Gladbach and Bayern — and they have a young superstar in Erling Haaland, who has already scored eight goals in the Champions League this campaign. However, Spurs could also have drawn one of Juventus or Barcelona, so this feels like a more manageable result.
This draw is pretty intriguing overall. None of the biggest teams were given an easy match-up — the Madrid vs. City tie is particularly intriguing, as is Chelsea vs. Bayern. And Atalanta vs. Valencia means that one of them is guaranteed to progress to the next round, which for lovers of potential upsets is pretty neat.
What do you think about the draw? Are you happy with the results? Have your say in the comments.
