Manchester United set to finalise 23-man squad following transfers

With the imminent departure of Marcos Rojo, Man United are close to completing the next phase of their squad overhaul.

Eight Manchester United academy graduates debuted last season but one is yet to have the honour this season.

Mason Greenwood, unfortunate not to start at Arsenal, has been afflicted with second season syndrome, as has Brandon Williams - a starter in the Under-23s' 6-2 thrashing of Liverpool on Saturday. Angel Gomes has left and, on Saturday, United confirmed they had terminated the loans of James Garner and Tahith Chong.

Garner, 19, will stay in the Championship with Nottingham Forest after being marginalised by new Watford coach Xisco Munoz. Chong, 20, has switched from Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga to Club Brugge in Belgium. Both are out of contract next year.

Four of the aforementioned quintet debuted under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but only Greenwood, 19, has had a significant role in United's core 22-man squad (soon to be 23 with Amad Diallo). Williams, 20, has taken Timothy Fosu-Mensah's place as right-back back-up but has not started in the Premier League since March.

As the MEN reported on Friday, Fosu-Mensah's departure has denied Williams a top-flight loan he was pining for. "Brandon will stay," Solskjaer stressed at Arsenal. "He played 23s against Liverpool, he needed match fitness.
